Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), officially launched the National Girls in ICT Programme at the Kofi Annan Training Centre in Accra. The ceremony was attended by the Minister, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, and GIFEC CEO, Mr. Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer. In his remarks, the Minister congratulated 100 outstanding girls from the 2025/2026 programme, comprising 50 each from the Volta and Upper East Regions.

Later, at the Government Accountability Series held at the Flagstaff House in Accra, Hon. Samuel Nartey George commended GIFEC for its significant contribution to Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, particularly in digital inclusion, connectivity and digital skills development. He highlighted the Fund’s impact through the Rural Telephony Project (RTP), which is extending connectivity to underserved and unserved communities.

The Minister further disclosed that the Ministry, in collaboration with GIFEC, the NCA and Mobile Network Operators, is prioritising the upgrade of rural 2G and 3G infrastructure to 4G and 5G-capable networks, supported by fibre and microwave infrastructure to enhance broadband connectivity. He also recognised GIFEC’s critical support for the Girls in ICT and One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) through its ICT centres, regional offices, infrastructure and equipment.

The recognition reinforces GIFEC’s strategic role in bridging the digital divide, expanding connectivity and equipping Ghanaians with the digital skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.
